Summer Therapeutic Day Treatment Program

This program is free for children with Medicaid and we provided transportation. Our program serves both males and females between the ages of 5 and 17. In addition youth need to meet one or more of the following criteria:

Students who require year-round treatment in order to sustain behavioral or emotional gains, or

Have behavioral/emotional problems so severe they cannot be handled in self-contained or special classrooms (ED) without this program during the school day or

As a supplement to the school day/year; would otherwise be placed on homebound instruction because of behavior or

Have deficits in the following areas: social skills, peer relations, dealing with authority, are hyperactive, have poor impulse control, are extremely depressed, and marginally connected with reality.

Summer Program Activities Include:

Provide 2 nutritious meals

Activities,

Evaluation

Medication education and management

Learn and use daily living skills

Enhance social and interpersonal skills, such as

Problem solving

Anger management

Community responsibility

Increased impulse control

Appropriate peer relations

Respecting authorities

Community Outings,

Wall climbing,

Field trips to museums,

Team building

Kings Dominion trips,

Swimming,

African-American cultural activities and much more …

Diabetes Self-management Workshop

The next free Diabetes Self-management Workshop will begin Tuesday, March 29th from 9AM - 11:30 AM and will meet each Tuesday through May 10th from 9 AM - 11 AM in the conference room at the Appomattox Area Health & Wellness Center, located at 321-C Poplar Drive, Petersburg (between the Children's Treatment Center and Poplar Springs Hospital).

This is a 6 week program and will complement and enhance your doctor's recommended
treatment plans as well as your condition management.

Participants in this workshop have experienced lower HbA1c levels as well as a decrease in diabetes-related symptoms.

The workshop will be co-taught by Cathy Marcum, LPN, Community Health Educator at
the Hopewell-Prince George Community Health Center & Betty Smith, RN, Community
Health Educator at the Appomattox Area Health & Wellness Center. Both took the dual
Diabetes and Chronic Disease Self Management Master Training developed by
Stanford University and provided through the Virginia Dept.
of Health's Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control.

LAY HEALTH PROMOTER PROGRAM

These are 12 week programs aimed at teaching community members how to be health

advocates for themselves and their families, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

These programs are offered free to the Tri-Cities and surrounding counties by Central Virginia Health Services through the Appomattox Area Health and Wellness Center. Classes meet once weekly and concentrate on chronic diseases, promotion of making healthy lifestyle choices and prevention of disease.

Do you have a thirst for knowledge?
Do you volunteer with Crater Community Hospice, or would like to do so?
Are you a nurse's aide or caregiver of someone with a chronic disease?
Do you wish to increase your health and longevity and nurture the growth of others?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, I challenge you to take the Lay Health Promoter Program.

Two programs are being held.

The first will begin Thursday, April 7th from

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM at the Appomattox Area Health & Wellness Center, located at

321-C Poplar Drive, Petersburg. We are located between the Children's Hospital

Petersburg Treatment Center and Poplar Springs Hospital.

The second program will begin Wednesday, May 25th from 9AM - 11 AM at the

Crater Community Hospice, located at 3916 S. Crater Road, Petersburg. This is

Just past the Walmart on S. Crater Road.

All who complete 80% of the program (attending 10 of the 12 classes & completion of

paper work) will receive a certificate of completion & a graduation program, a quarterly

newsletter & a gift from CVHS of a blood pressure cuff & stethoscope.

Tri-Cities Brain Injury Support Group

The Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) announces a new support group in the Tri-Cities area of Petersburg, Hopewell, Colonial Heights.

Who: This facilitated support group is for adults living with brain injury and family, friends & other concerned people in the lives of those living with brain injury.
